Gulls, like all UK wild bird species, are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. This makes it a criminal offence to kill, injure or take a gull; or to take, damage or destroy its nest whilst the nest is in use or being built. It is also a criminal offence to take or destroy their eggs. However, there are exceptions to this and the law recognises that in some circumstances control may be necessary

Reasons for & Permissions needed
The government issues one off Licenses which permit authorised persons to control certain species of gull for specific reasons. The reasons Herring gulls can be controlled under License are:
- To preserve or protect public health and safety.
- To preserve air safety (e.g. near airports) or
- To prevent serious damage to livestock, food for livestock or crops. If the reasons given are for anything other than these, then the people concerned would potentially be acting illegally.
We have to apply for these Licenses on an Individual Site basis for our customers so please allow up to 8 weeks in order for a License to be processed, we need this before any work can proceed.

PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH GULLS
Gull Waste, Droppings and Disease
Bird droppings carry many diseases transmissible to humans, including thrush, E. coli and salmonella poisoning. Seagulls also carry a range of ectoparasites (including bedbugs, fleas and ticks) and these are also known to affect humans.
Gulls get particularly aggressive during the nesting season and have been known to ‘dive bomb’ people who may be working or walking too close to their nest, causing the potential for injury. Additionally, Gulls gather a huge amount of materials for nesting and if positioned awkwardly, this can block guttering and ventilation systems. In either of these cases, there is a risk to the health and safety of staff, as well as the potential for loss of business due to maintenance ‘downtime’ and repair.

The main species of gull that nest on roofs and dwellings are the Herring Gull and the Lesser Black Backed Gull.
In the case of nesting gulls, Research has proven that, generally, pairs will accept and carry on incubating dummy eggs. Plastic eggs part filled with sand can be painted to look like gull`s eggs. These are then substituted for the real thing. We carry this procedure out with the utmost care, delivering a solution with minimal disruption to the surrounding environment.
